A Summertime Riverside Maternity Session in Montana

Skalkaho Bend is a great location for outdoor maternity photos. It was a mid-September evening, and the weather was perfectly warm. We shot beside the Bitterroot River in Skalkaho Bend Park, located in Hamilton, Montana. Skalkaho Bend is a great option for maternity photos in the warmer months (May through September). It offers lush greenery, tall grass, walking paths to get to and from each spot, a view of the Bitterroot Mountain Range, and the Bitterroot River running through it.

Outfit preparations

Tashyna came ready with two outfits and a few extra pieces that we prepped together before the shoot. We chose the pieces based on the setting and the vibe that we had in mind for her session. She brought her partner along for extra support and to be incorporated into some of the photos.

Utilizing different scenery and poses

Throughout Tashyna's session, we worked our way around the area, aiming to create a final gallery of diverse images with different elements of nature captured in the photographs. We worked through a series of simple yet flattering poses, from standing amongst tall grass and beneath trees, to laying on bedded-down grass, and capturing candid moments of her strolling the walking paths. We utilized her flowy skirt to create movement in the photos, which brought a playful and feminine vibe to the images. Once the sun began sinking below the mountain line, we moved to the riverside to capture her in her final outfit.

The cross between nature and a mother carrying life

The final dress was fitted and white, showcasing her growing belly and making her stand out against the deep blue river water. She felt comfortable enough to go ankle-deep into the water. These became some of our favorite photos from the session. The beauty of outdoor sessions lies in the connection between nature and a mother growing life within her. The essence of this shines through her images and will be something she can carry with her and her child for years to come.
