A Dreamy, Mountainside Sunset Couples Session.
Hamilton montana x missoula montan
Montana is known for its sky, and one of my favorite times of day to do a photo session is about 20 minutes after sunset... also known as blue hour. It's not every night that the sky is painted in deep oranges and pinks, so the best way to get the most out of your session, with the hopes of getting lucky with a sunset, is to start shooting about 30–40 minutes before the sun is supposed to sink behind the mountains. This way, even if there's not much of a sunset during your session, you'll still get plenty of great images with nice light beforehand.
Aava, Travis, and I got lucky on this specific summer night. We started our session at 8:30pm, walking the scenic loop of the location I had scouted out weeks prior. We took photos at various spots to give their gallery of images some variety. Once we made it back down from the loop, we were chatting about our future summer plans as the sunset began to burn in a hot pink hue. Minutes passed, and it continued to get brighter and brighter! We took our opportunity to get some more shots on the hillside with the sunset and mountain views in the background. The scene had romance and whimsy written allll over it! By this time, Aava and Travis were very comfortable posing, and we got some incredible shots that look like they came straight out of a western romance novel lol.
My favorite posing prompt during this session was having Travis wrap his arms around Aava's back while Aava let her arms go and tilted her head back as they swayed side to side. Poses like this no doubt feel silly in the moment... but they make some of the most dreamy, candid shots ever, which are my favorite!!
This sunset session with A & T was definitely a memorable one. I'm so glad they were willing to keep shooting when the sky changed color!
